Roy Roberts Every Shade of Blues

Roy Roberts met Carolina Collaborations' filmmaker, Dr. Emily D. Edwards, back in 2005. She asked if he would be interested in providing some music for the soundtrack of the movie, Scripture Cake: A Southern Cuisine Movie. Roy was enthusiastic with the message of the movie, and to go back to his gospel roots, so he rolled up his sleeves and produced six songs; Four are original material, two are instrumentals only. He also sings a medley of gospel favorites. Some of this music was re-cut and used on his CD "Man With A Message," available on this website. Scripture Cake was released in 2006

His next venture in to filmmaking was on another Carolina Collaborations' Feature Film, Bone Creek.  This time, Roy provided some a cappella voicework, singing the traditional song, "Motherless Child" for the movie, as well as making a cameo appearance in front of the film camera. Roy donned an orange prison suit and got "locked up" in jail with some other talented blues artists for an important prison scene.  Bone Creek was released in 2008, winning the "Award of Excellence" by the BEA in 2009.

Roy's Rock House Records studio, also was used to record many of the songs used in Bone Creek, which are available on the CD "Popskull & High Art" available below.
The film score has won the Moondance Film Festival Sandcastle Award in late 2009 and has been played on many radio stations throughout the US, Canada, and Europe.

Drama: Graduate foreign exchange student, Nora (Alison Walls), sets out to photograph the rural South before bulldozers destroy its rustic, magical beauty for strip malls and condos. Her adventure goes astray as she gets further into the backwoods. Her car breaks down and her assignment gets as lost as she does. Nora encounters Effie (Jane Hallstrom) who tries to help, but complicates Nora’s problems with her own demons. Effie tells the story of Israel Summerfield (Logie Meachum, Two Soldiers), a moonshiner and Avenel Cannon (Juan Fernandez, Walker Texas Ranger, Felicity, To Serve and Protect), an escaped convict who ends up making a deal with the devil to enslave an otherworldly entity. Nora’s outsider status makes her incapable of realizing that the magic she seeks to preserve has already found her.

Winner of the Broadcast Educators Association (BEA) "Award of Excellence" 2009!
